Smacked

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Published in South Africa in 2005 by author Danila Botha,  ”Smacked” was her first book.  In this book she was unafraid to show addiction as it really is - a desperate, ugly struggle to get her next hit, an obsession that led her to abandon everything that once meant something to her.  Her family, including two young sons, her home all for a bit of smack (heroin)  and crack.

She tells it like it is - or was.  She tells all with blunt honesty with no concern of how she portrays herself and the tale of her hard fought for recovery.  She relates it as a very hectic story that goes right down into the darkness of addiction.  How addiction doesn’t discriminate she was not a likely candidate for addiction as a straight A student, a hall monitor, played net ball and went to university.  She says she had to work incredibly hard to get where she is today.  That she is all for opening the can of worms and confronting the shadows.  The more open we are about these things, the more we will learn.

It was well received with five reprints and will be reissued in July by her new Publisher Penguin Books with an addition chapter on Ten Steps  she took to stay sober.  She is a brave woman and has since overcoming her addiction become a journalist and writer  who regularly shares her experiences in the hopes of helping others.

Well done to you Danila - and please keep writing and helping.

Whitney Houston - Still Whacked on Crack?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

After a decade of rising to the unquestioned top of her field, and another decade of her falling from grace into crack addiction, marital troubles, her young daughter threatening to kill her mother with a knife and then her daughter’s own suicide attempt, it has been a long, sorrowful downhill slide to watch happen to one so loved and revered the world over. Happily, we have very recently watched Whitney raise herself up and out of her troubling circumstances. She was encouraged to go into rehab by loving family members. And she did. She got things on track, producing another monumental album and the Whitney that the world loves to love was back to her unbelievable performance level, perhaps even enriched by the struggles she had to overcome to get there again. Back on top and the world applauded.
But troubling evidence is mounting that she is not quite out of the woods yet. Several unprofessional and painfully publicized performances after the release of her latest blockbuster album leads to the conclusion that all is not remedied and she is still embroiled in drug use.
So many families have seen this troubling and heartbreaking pattern with crack addiction. It is often seen as one of the hardest addictions to heal from. Thinking a short - 30 day - 12 Step program is going to give the person all the tools needed to destroy one’s demons, especially a demon as malicious and cunning as crack is folly. In seeking a rehab program for a loved one or for yourself consider the benefits of a long term drug rehab program that heals all the various levels of addiction. It takes more than thirty days to heal from this deep a wound,

Can Prescription Drugs Make You Fat?

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

In this very weight conscious society of ours, one problem gets googled more than any other - “weight loss”. It seems everyone is battling the bulge these days. Now it has come to light that the very medicines you are getting from your doctor may be contributing to the problem.

Statistics have risen on both obesity and use of prescription pills and it could very well be there is a connection.

Drugs like steroids (i.e. prednisone), anti-depressants (Elavil, Paxil, Zoloft) and even anti-psychotics (Zyprexa) are proven to directly cause weight gain, as much as five to ten pounds a month. It is not uncommon for regular users of these drugs to swell up to unnatural obesity, even if the diet has not changed that much, or at all.

Other drugs like Prozak, Wellbutrin, and street drugs like methamphetimines and crack do the opposite which is why you see people taking these substances looking rail thin and even gaunt as the normal body fat gets stripped away. However these drugs have such drastic direct and detrimental effects, that it would be very unwise to use them in a fat loss quest. Your body may become skinny, but you could lose your zest for life. You could lose your life altogether as a matter of record.

Between the two extremes perhaps is where we want to be. The old standby of watching what you eat being short on the sugar and long on the veggies and protein, may be the answer to not only weight problems, but keeping the mood stabilized as well. Using this method is safer, easier on your body, easier on your mind, and contributes to health and longevity rather than destroying the delicate balance of a healthy body.

When you are seeking help with depression or weight loss, it might be wise to consider natural alternative treatments:
1. exercise releases endorphins
2. sunshine on the skin also does that
3. eating a nutrient dense diet and cutting out worthless calories makes energy abundant in the body.

An unhealthy body, whatever the cause, turns into a nightmarish concoction of symptoms. Why not consider reverting back to a simpler, more healthful diet and lifestyle and let the healthy body re-emerge as the natural consequence.

Could They Be Using Cocaine or Crack?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

What is cocaine?
The drug cocaine is extracted from the South American Coca plant. It is a powerfully addictive stimulant.
Crack is cocaine cooked in baking soda and water, sometimes a solvent is used to form a chunk. It is broken into pieces resembling small rocks.
Cocaine is a white powder and crack is an off white solid. The name crack comes from a cracking sound made when it is smoked.

How is it used?
Cocaine is most commonly snorted or sniffed into the nose where it is absorbed through the membranes, it can also be injected. It produces a high that lasts about a half hour
Crack is most commonly smoked. Smoking crack is called freebasing, it produces a faster more intense and shorter high.
It is the short term high that results in binges of repeated use that become more frequent and the dosage increases to achieve a similar high.

Street Names
Some street names for cocaine are coke, snow, blow, nose candy and others. Names for crack are crack, rock, freebase.

Signs of Cocaine and Crack Usage
If as a parent or spouse suspecting drug abuse here are some things to be aware of.
Cocaine and crack both come in small plastic bags that are twisted or tied off. If they have traces of white, crystalline powder it is probably cocaine.
Discarded syringes, spoons with burn marks or residue in them are evidence of intravenous drug use, cocaine can be injected.
Glass stems, brillo pads and stripped wires are used to smoke crack. Soda cans bent with indentations can be a homemade pipe. Baking soda is used to make crack, small mirrors or smooth surfaces are used to snort cocaine, traces of white powder on them can be looked for,
Someone sniffing a lot, has a red, raw or scabby nose, is possibly from cocaine snorting. Injection marks in the arms, knees, toes from intravenous use.
Smoking crack can result in burns on the lips, face and hands and a callus will form on the thumb from lighting the lighter repeatedly.
Usually a person on cocaine or crack will have glassy eyes with large pupils and might wear dark glasses even indoors to hide this. They will have a hard time relaxing, they might be nervous, anxious, irritable even aggressive. They may appear hyper and not be able to sleep for extended periods while high and then crash and sleep for days. Lack of appetite and weight loss can occur, excessive thirst, cotton mouth are also frequent. They usually have bad skin tone and a lot of blemishes.
The person will be short of money even if employed. Might spend an entire paycheck on a binge and be asking for money, loans and sell off possessions to get money.
The down hill slide is very fast.

There are devastating effects of long term usage. The addict has to take more and more of the drug to achieve the same high. He can experience enormous mood swings, paranoia, hallucinations.
